Lance Wheeler announces plan to run in the 2026 state senate election

CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – For over four years, Lance Wheeler has served as a commissioner on the Kanawha County Commission. Now, he feels like he's ready to take on a larger role.

"I think it's time that I would like to put my experience to the state senate and bring in that experience in finding ways that we can better the state of West Virginia, not just here in Kanawha County, but all across the state," Wheeler said.

Wheeler said he will be running for the Senate's 8th District seat and is seeking the Republican party's nomination. He said that he feels his role in the Kanawha County Commission has prepared him for a seat in the state senate.

"You look at all the great things we've done here in Kanawha County, bringing prosperity and improving the lifestyle for every Kanawha Countian. I want to bring that same work ethic, and I want to bring that same mindset to the state senate while also working with our local municipalities, our cities, our county commissions," Wheeler said.

The 8th District seat is currently held by Senator Kevin Bartlett (R-Kanawha), who was selected for the position after former Senator Mark Hunt was elected as the West Virginia State Auditor.

Wheeler said that if he is elected, making a push to eliminate the state income tax will be one of his top priorities.

"You know, we've done a great job here in the state of West Virginia recently reducing the state income tax, but the ultimate goal is we have to get that to zero. Not only is that putting more money back into your pockets, but it's enticing businesses, jobs, to come here to the state of West Virginia, build their manufacturing, build their industries and really bring prosperity here to the state of West Virginia," Wheeler said.

He also said he plans to focus on eliminating wasteful spending in the West Virginia state budget.

"As county commissioner, I have made our government much more efficient. Saving taxpayer money with KRT, our ambulance authority, millions of dollars, but just making us more efficient without cutting essential needs. That's going to be my priority, finding that waste, abuse in the state of West Virginia's budget, getting those savings, and putting them back in the pockets of our taxpayers, of our citizens, here in the state of West Virginia," Wheele said.

The Senate's 8th District includes Charleston, Dunbar, Institute, Sissonville, Cross Lanes, and Nitro. It also includes parts of Putnam, Jackson, Roane, and Clay counties. Wheeler said that he plans to take a boots-on-the-ground approach to his campaign and meet with residents of all cities that make up the 8th District.

"I'm looking forward to going across the entire district, whether that's Putnam County, Jackson County, Roane County, Clay County, and getting to introduce myself personally to those constituents and explain to them why I can help serve them in the state senate, and that I will be a voice they can listen to, and I will be there to always support them in any issue that comes up," Wheeler said.
