Shock move from senior ABC correspondent after alleged secret warship trip

  • Reporter failed to disclose $16,000 junket

A high-profile ABC journalist has resigned from the public broadcaster, 10 weeks after allegations emerged that he had accepted a paid work trip to Germany and had not disclosed it.

Andrew Greene was the ABC's defense correspondent when he reported on German manufacturer ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) earlier this year.

Media Watch revealed in June that Mr. Greene had traveled as a guest of the company while telling his bosses he was on annual leave.

The journalist did not inform his bosses about the arrangement, and a segment was broadcast promoting TKMS, which was competing against Japan-based Mitsubishi Heavy Industries for a contract to build a fleet of Australian warships.

The senior defense correspondent filed a segment for The World Today about TKMS, including quotes from its chief executive Oliver Burkhard.

"We know what we're doing," Mr. Burkhard told Mr. Greene in the report.

I know our competitors, they have never been exported in the past.

The ABC had thought that Mr. Greene had obtained audio of Mr. Burkhard's press conference by email, rather than traveling to Germany in person.

"Across northern Germany, shipyards are at capacity as military orders increase. Rising global strategic tensions mean business is booming," Mr. Greene reported.

After revelations of Greene's alleged junket came to light, the story was removed from the ABC website.

Other media, including The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, did disclose the travel arrangements to readers at the time.

Media Watch host Linton Besser exposed the veteran journalist and said he had become "undone by weakness before temptation" and that the scandal would undermine trust in journalistic institutions.

Greene spent 10 weeks on leave while the broadcaster investigated the allegations before he resigned on Monday.

Canberra bureau chief David Lipson advised ABC staff in an email.

"The ABC maintains the importance of upholding its editorial and other policies," Mr. Lipson wrote.

In June, ABC stated that the Media Watch allegations were serious, and if proven, Greene's actions would be "unacceptable and could constitute misconduct."

The junket to Germany on a business-class return ticket was worth around $16,000, which also included hotel stays in Hamburg and Kiel, paid for by ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems.

The ABC confirmed to Daily Mail that Greene had resigned.

"We thank Andrew for the great contribution he has made to the ABC and to audiences, including his excellent reporting as National Security and Defence Reporter, and wish him all the best," a spokesperson said.

The ABC maintains the importance of upholding its editorial and other policies.

Greene joined ABC in 2010 and had been the broadcaster's defense correspondent for the last decade.

Australia's $10 billion warship program has attracted plenty of international competition among global shipbuilders, particularly since Defence Minister Richard Marles' 2023 announcement of an ambitious naval shipbuilding program.

These companies have spared no expense, even hosting foreign journalists on luxurious press trips to showcase their naval technology and promote their bids.

Malcolm-Jamal Warner was not swimming with his daughter at the time of his passing, officials say.

New details have been released regarding the death of Malcolm-Jamal Warner.

The actor, best known for his roles on "The Cosby Show" and "The Resident," died on July 20 after being swept away by a current while vacationing with his family in Costa Rica, according to ABC News .

His official cause of death was described as "asphyxiation by submersion," according to the outlet. He was 54.

It was initially reported that Warner "was swimming with his 8-year-old daughter" when a group of surfers "spotted them struggling and dove in to help," according to ABC News.

But new details about the actor's death are telling a different story.

In a statement released by Costa Rica's Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) and shared by People , authorities confirmed that Warner's daughter was not in the water with him when he drowned.

"Mr. Warner was playing with his daughter at the seashore at one point. He then left her out of the water, and he and a friend of his entered the sea," the OIJ wrote, according to People.

"It was at that moment that they were swept away by the current, and the friend managed to get out," the statement continued.

The OIJ further clarified that Warner was "pulled out by several people on the beach" and "received care from Red Cross officials" before being declared dead at the scene.

Warner is survived by his wife and 8-year-old daughter, whom he chose to keep out of the spotlight.

He did, however, reveal that he met his future wife when he was 45 years old and that they've been together for nearly 10 years during a May appearance on the " Hot & Bothered " podcast.

"We have never had a fight, an argument, a raised voice or a harsh word said to one another. ... And it's not like we agree on everything," he said in the episode.

"I think because we met later in life, we've just always been at a point where we have a way of communicating like adults," he added.

The couple got married in 2017, according to People , and they welcomed their daughter shortly after.

Warner describes his daughter as his and his wife's 'mini us'

In a 2021 Instagram post , Warner spoke about his marriage and journey into fatherhood.

He admitted that he and his wife weren't interested in each other when they first met and "were pretty clear that this was not going to become anything other than maybe a cool friendship."

At the time, he was upfront with his then-girlfriend about not really wanting kids.

"I had already decided the next chapters of my life would be about something bigger than family," he wrote in the caption.

"Never in my wildest dreams did I envision that a few years later I'd be making my very first cake with the help of the beautiful manifestation of our love, who is truly our 'mini us,'" he wrote about his daughter.

"Whatever 'bigger than family' ideas I had in my head before these two beautiful spirits came into my life are now fueled to be even bigger. Life is even more fulfilling," he added.

In 2019, he revealed the reasoning behind keeping his daughter's identity private.

"Thank you for sharing in my joy as a father even though I don't post her face. She has the rest of her life for that life. Right now I just want her to BE," he wrote in an Instagram post at the time.

"Kino's Journey" Official Report from Anime Expo 2025 Special Stage: Aoi Yuki and Asami Seto Take the Spotlight!

Story by Koji Uchida

The official report has arrived from "The Apothecary Diaries" special stage event held at Anime Expo 2025 in Los Angeles on Friday, July 4, 2025!

Aoi Yuki and Asami Seto thrilled the audience with a live voice acting performance of scenes featuring Maomao and Shisui, causing a huge reaction.

Official Report: "Anime Expo 2025 The Apothecary Diaries S2 Guest Panel"

From July 3rd to 6th, Los Angeles, USA, hosted "Anime Expo 2025," North America's largest anime convention. A special "The Apothecary Diaries S2 Guest Panel" featured Aoi Yuki, the voice of Maomao, and Asami Seto, who plays Shisui/Luolan.

The event attracted 2,000 local fans of "The Apothecary Diaries," creating an electric atmosphere even before it started. Many attendees dressed up as Maomao, Jinshi, and Shisui. The excitement increased with the screening of the promotional video, causing widespread cheers. The audience's enthusiasm reached its peak when Yuki and Seto appeared.

Despite being overwhelmed by the fans' passion, Yuki greeted the crowd in English: "Hello AX! Are you enjoying The Apothecary Diaries? I'm very happy to be here with you just after the Season 2 finale. Please have fun today!" The audience responded with shouts of "Ao-chan kawaii!" mixing English and Japanese. Seto then read from her notes: "Hello everyone! I'm so happy to join the Anime Expo stage with Aoi-san this year! Please enjoy the show!" Yuki playfully pointed out Seto's use of notes, which filled the venue with laughter as the event commenced.

When asked about her first Anime Expo experience and the Los Angeles atmosphere, Yuki enthusiastically shared, "I've always wanted to come to LA, so I'm thrilled to finally be here! It's amazing to see so many fans supporting 'The Apothecary Diaries' in North America. I'm overwhelmed by everyone's enthusiasm!"

The event took place on Friday, July 4th local time, which was Saturday morning, July 5th in Japan - right after the final episode aired.

Yuki expressed her confidence in the second season, saying, "Season 2 is full of episodes with so much to talk about. Have you all seen the final episode yet? Some of you who came to the event early this morning might not have had the chance to watch it. Please make sure to watch it when you get home. It's truly an amazing finale." Seto shared her joy, adding, "It's wonderful and I feel so happy to be here with all of you who have been watching 'The Apothecary Diaries' every week and have been moved by it. It's great to share this moment together."

To the delight of the audience, a live voice acting performance of scenes featuring Maomao and Shisui was announced. The crowd's enthusiasm intensified further, erupting in cheers during the first scene performed—from Episode 25, "Maomao and Mao Mao," depicting their initial encounter.

Yuki admitted to feeling nervous performing live. Seto, however, found reassurance in Yuki's presence, remarking, "I feel reassured having Aoi-san (Yuki) with me, and it's a fresh experience to get immediate reactions from everyone after each line we deliver."

Regarding the character development of Shisui, who made her debut in the second season, Seto revealed that the main direction received was "Raise the energy level!" The intention, as viewers may have noticed, was to create a sharp contrast between Luolan and Shisui. When portraying Luolan, she focused on conveying a strong sense of "determination" to achieve her goals. In contrast, for Shisui, while purposeful in her actions, the emphasis was on expressing her genuine emotions when interacting with Maomao and Xiaolan, ensuring her smiles and relationships felt authentic. This explanation earned appreciative sighs from the audience.

When asked about the evolution of the characters' relationship, Yuki explained that the dynamic between Maomao and Shisui naturally emerged during interactions with Seto. Rather than a conscious effort, they effortlessly settled into this atmosphere, aiming to establish a comfortable distance between the two characters.

Next, the audience was captivated by the live voice acting performance of a pivotal scene from Episode 45, "Taibon," where Maomao hesitated between calling her "Shisui" or "Luolan." The tense atmosphere culminated in a thunderous standing ovation, moving both the host and fans to tears.

Discussing the creation of the scene, Seto recalled, "I clearly remember being extremely focused in front of the microphone during that day's recording session." Yuki added that their connection felt natural, driven by deep emotional investment in their characters. Seto further said, "For crucial scenes like this, an actor's concentration is essential, and we were fortunate to have an excellent recording environment. After the session, Aoi-san took the lead in creating a relaxed atmosphere for everyone."

Regarding her portrayal of Shisui's final scene, Seto revealed, "I knew the ending from the beginning and performed with that in mind. I referred to the manga while preparing for the voice recording, and Luolan's final monologue was particularly lengthy. Given the scene's importance, I started preparing well in advance of the recording session."

Yuki shared a surprising anecdote from Episode 41, "The Fox Village," where she said to Seto, "Today's a date episode, right?" and Seto replied, "Our last date." This shocking revelation caused a stir among the audience. Seto explained, "As Shisui, I was already aware of and prepared for the approaching end, so I was a bit on edge... (laughs)"

Yuki passionately added, "Maomao was fascinated by the new village and its culture. However, Shisui sees things very differently. There are many scenes that hint at this contrast, so I really hope viewers will rewatch the series to catch these nuances."

Story by Koji Uchida

The final live voice acting featured the scene from "The Apothecary Diaries" Episode 6, "The Garden Party," highlighting the famous poison-tasting moment. A collective silence fell upon the audience as the scene unfolded, culminating in the loudest cheer of the day when Maomao declared, "This is poison."

Amidst the roaring applause, Yuki, when asked about the voice recording for this scene, humorously suggested comparing the project PV and the actual series due to significant differences in direction and performance. She added, "Now that I've really settled into Maomao's character, when I watch this scene, I can't help but wonder if that poisoned soup might actually taste good!" This quip brought the house down.

As the live voice acting segment concluded and the event came to a close, a delightful surprise awaited the attendees: an exclusive visual of Maomao and Shisui, created specifically for the occasion. The illustration, depicting Shisui attempting to embrace Maomao, caused a frenzy among the audience. This emotionally resonant artwork, revealed right after the broadcast of the final episode, deeply touched the crowd. Seto remarked, "While Shisui is initiating the hug, you can tell Maomao isn't exactly opposed to it. It's cute, isn't it?" Yuki playfully added, "In Japanese, we'd describe Maomao's expression as ' landscape of the moonlight - meaning she's not entirely displeased!

In their closing remark, Seto said, "Thank you all for coming today. I truly felt your passion. Your reactions when we discussed 'The Apothecary Diaries' were incredibly heartwarming. With a sequel confirmed, I hope you'll continue to love and support the series."

Yuki followed up, "I'm so happy to have met all of you in Los Angeles alongside Seto-chan today. Your enthusiasm was palpable and deeply moving. Jinshi, who was really disappointed he couldn't join us, would be thrilled by your reactions too! With the sequel announcement, I hope we can discuss 'The Apothecary Diaries' with you all again someday. We'd be delighted if you'd welcome us back warmly when that time comes!"

Gone too soon

The tragic incident reportedly occurred on Saturday night when Gregory accidentally shot and killed the 13-year-old in his Florida apartment. Gregory is the son of Duane's wife, Francie, and has joined the Dog the Bounty Hunter star on the hit show on numerous occasions.

A representative of the family stated that his psychiatric hold was due to the immense grief of losing his son, adding that he was struggling with the "freak accident".

Duane and Francie also issued a statement following Anthony's death, asking for privacy as they dealt with their grief.

"We are grieving as a family over this incomprehensible, tragic accident and would ask for continued prayers as we grieve the loss of our beloved grandson, Anthony," they said.

The Collier County Sheriff's Office provided insight into the devastating accident. "The call came into our dispatch at 8:08 pm. This "was an isolated incident," they explained.

Our detectives are conducting a thorough investigation and looking into all the elements of this tragic incident. The investigation includes statements from witnesses who were at the scene, forensic testing, subpoenas, and search warrants.

Steadfast support

Duane and Francie are no strangers to heartbreak, with both experiencing unimaginable loss throughout their lives. The TV personality's fifth wife, Beth Smith, passed away in 2019 after a long battle with throat cancer, while Francie's husband Bob Frane left her a widow in 2018.

"We understood the pain that the other one was feeling, and in those tough days and moments, we helped each other stand up," she shared with Entertainment Tonight

"We could cry with each other and talk about what we were feeling. We were able to walk alongside each other through the pain and heartbreak, and it brought us together in this amazing way."

Duane expanded on their connection in an interview with TMZ Live "For a living, she's a rancher and she recently lost her husband to cancer six months before I lost Beth Chapman, so we hopped on the phone, started talking to each other, crying and consoling each other and then one thing led to another and it's just incredible that I've been able to meet someone like her," he said.

"With Francie, I'm allowed to speak about Beth, we speak about her husband. We cry. We hold each other."

The 72-year-old has welcomed 13 children, with two tragically passing away unexpectedly. His daughter Barbara died in a car crash in 2006, while his son Zebadiah died one month after his birth in 1980.

Duane is also the father of Christopher, Duane Lee II, Leland, Wesley, James Robert, Tucker, Lyssa, Bonnie, Cecily, and Garry, and discovered that he was a father to another son, Jon, in 2023.
