A new diverging diamond interchange at Interstate 475 and U.S. 20A is set to open to traffic in early August, according to the Ohio Department of Transportation.
Ahead of the opening, ODOT will host a public event on August 4 at 2 p.m. on U.S. 20A, on the east side of the interchange near Spartan Chemical. The event will include remarks from ODOT officials, local leaders and business representatives on the interchange's expected benefits for regional logistics and traffic flow.
During the event, U.S. 20A will be closed between Ford Street and Briarfield Boulevard, except for local business access. Parking will be available on both sides of the bridge, and ODOT staff will assist with directing traffic and participants.
"We're adding a new highway asset - a new interchange of the most modern design currently available in traffic engineering," said Pat McColley, ODOT District 2 deputy director. "We'd like the public to be part of this, and to personally experience this new highway infrastructure prior to its opening," he said.
The DDI replaces a traditional overpass carrying U.S. 20A over I-475. The $101 million project began in 2022 and includes widening approximately five miles of I-475 between U.S. 24 and Airport Highway, reconstructing pavement, replacing bridges over the Norfolk Southern Railroad and Monclova Road, and resurfacing about three miles of U.S. 24 from Waterville-Monclova Road to just east of the I-475 interchange.
The Ohio Department of Transportation's original plan called for the interchange to open by the end of 2024.
This is the second DDI in northwest Ohio. The first opened in 2017 at I-475 and State Route 25 in Perrysburg.
Another one is planned for Airport Highway over I-475 in Springfield Township , which will cost an estimated $36 million and be under construction from the spring of 2028 to the fall of 2029, according to ODOT.
Fremont Pike over I-75 in Perrysburg is also scheduled to become a diverging diamond for an estimated $25 million. This construction would take place from the spring of 2027 to the fall of 2028, and there would be a seven-month closure under I-75.
